Welcome to The Heroes of Huron County website.
Huron County has a rich military history – a history that must be remembered and honoured – and that is just what we plan to do. The Heroes of Huron County – A Directory of Honour and Remembrance – 1914-1921, is a new book well underway by Goderich, Ontario author Jim Rutledge. Following the success of Jim’s first book, The Men of Huron – A Book of Honour and Remembrance – 1939-1946, the new book will recognize and commemorate the more than 510 individuals with a connection to Huron County who paid the supreme sacrifice during WW1.
Work on the book started in 2010, and with the help of volunteer research assistant Jeanette Elliott, much has been accomplished, but there is so much more work to do. As we promote the book throughout Huron County we hope to connect with friends and relatives of the “Heroes” who might have photographs, letters, documents or stories that they would be willing to share. Each piece of information gathered will help us to create a more complete and personal story about each individual.
In 2014 & 2015 we travelled to France and Belgium to visit where the Heroes of Huron rest and are honoured. We photographed their headstones where they rest and photographed the memorials their names are inscribed on. We placed flags at their headstones.... the Canadian flag, the Canadian Ensign of 1868-1921 plus the Ontario Ensign.
The Heroes of Huron - A Directory of Honour and Remembrance - 1914 to 1921 will be published during the summer of 2016, following 6 years of work and research. Publishing it at this time will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the 161st Huron Battalion forming and going overseas in 1916.
So feel free to browse through the list of honour and see if you recognize a name or two – or if you find a name is missing please let us know. With your help we will honour and remember The Heroes of Huron County.
